Giving the answer is the easy part. We took it out.

A student who gets the answer handed over has finished the homework and learned nothing. LEXA is built around the opposite constraint.

The edge has a ceiling, and we have measured it: twenty seconds to read a long passage on a €120 tablet, and a 2-billion-parameter model does not reason like a 40-billion one. That is why LEXA is hybrid — local by default, cloud when it is needed — and why we spend our effort on the side that gets better every year.

Three ways to use it. One of them is free for good.

What's next

Instrumenting the app showed our system prompt weighs ~1,370 tokens and costs ~18 seconds before the first word on the €120 tablet. Fine-tuning a European open model — Salamandra, ALIA — so that refusing to give the answer lives in the weights, not the prompt, would cut that to ~3 seconds. It is the quality fix and the latency fix at once. That work runs with technical advisory from the BSC AI Factory.

Our users are minors. These are the commitments, written so a parent can check them.

Free tier: nothing leaves the device

The model runs locally. There is no server on the other end to send anything to.

No student data trains any model

Not on the free tier, not on the paid ones. This is a design decision, not a setting.

How is this different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is built to answer. LEXA is built to teach, which means it will not give the answer even when asked repeatedly. It also follows the actual school curriculum, and the free tier keeps everything on the device.

What happens if my child just asks for the answer?

The tutor breaks the problem into a smaller question. If they keep pushing, it keeps asking. We test this on purpose, and when a model gives in we treat it as a bug.

Is the free tier really free?

Yes, and it stays free. It runs on your device, so serving it costs us nothing. The paid tiers add a stronger cloud model and voice.

What data do you collect?

On the free tier, none: there is no server involved. On paid tiers, the conversations needed to run the service, processed in the EU, never used to train models. Full policy on the privacy page.
